Level-Headed Christian Finance Systems ? The superior Insights

Debt and financial problems don?t discriminate; you?ll find people of walks of life and colors which can be experiencing hardships. There is currently over $800 million in credit card debt, the typical household is carrying around a burden of $14k in credit card debt, and people who will be in real trouble have 2 xs to 5x a whole lot of, and therefore are seeking help.

People gravitate towards other folks of comparable interests, and no secret that many consumers buy from individuals who we understand and trust, therefore it is no surprise that Christians consider Christians form of hosting and financial advice or guidance. Lately there was a lot more non-profit (and a spattering of for-profit) organizations that supply Bible based financial guidance which have popped in the past decade, and then for some Christians which is just what they are searching for. With regards to getting help with your money one might feel uncomfortable sharing their personal financial information with somebody, but if that a person is somebody using a similar background-or religious preference-as you it may feel less intrusive.

Fortunately, for Christians, that result in financial problems, the Bible is an excellent resource on money matters. Actually the Bible has over 250 verses giving advice in regards to personal finance and funds, using the book of Proverbs providing an excellent slice of that financial wisdom. That may seem ironic for some who belief that the Bible declared that money was the main of most evil, but in fact the bible says that, ?the passion for financial resources are the root of most evil.?

Christians fall victim to the possible risks with financial turmoil, as do non-Christians, and like mentioned previously financial problems get lucky and everybody indiscriminately. Things such as credit card debt could happen to anybody in spite of their faith, but luckily for Christians, you can find Christian credit counseling organizations that can help believers escape debt or prepare themselves to stop debt problems in the future.

There are several types of Christian financial counseling nevertheless the hottest way of financial counseling is debt related counseling. While using growing number of people getting back in credit card debt, it?s really no surprise that credit counseling is growing in popularity and for folks that could feel more comfortable with receiving credit counseling from the Christian organization there is a great deal of credit counseling organizations offering credit counseling.

Below are a few with the widely used Christian credit counselors available:

1. CCC (Christian Credit Counselors Inc.,)

2. Crown Financial

3. Family Life Credit Services

4. Dave Ramsey

A good beginning is looking into the internet and performing a few internet searches to discover a credit counselor, a large number of credit counseling organizations will conduct a free debt analysis to acquire pointed in the right direction, so that?s something you should check out when you?re in debt deep water.

Dogwood diplomacy: US gift of trees to Japan is cherry on top of Okinawa deal

A century after Japan presented the US with a gift of 3,000 cherry trees, the US is reciprocating with 3,000 specially bred dogwoods. But the deal to nearly halve the number of Marines on Okinawa may be even sweeter.

US and Japanese leaders have come and gone, as has a horrific world war that interrupted the two countries? relations, but for 100 years the flowering cherry trees of Washington?s tidal basin have stood ? and blossomed every spring ? as a testament to US-Japan friendship.

Now, a century after Japan presented the people of the United States with 3,000 cherry trees, the US is reciprocating by presenting Japan with 3,000 dogwood trees to be planted in a Tokyo park.

The gift of the dogwoods, which were specially developed to thrive in Japan, was to be announced by President Obama at a dinner he will host for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda at the White House Monday night.

?We hope that, as a gesture, it will be something that our children and our children?s children, both in the United States and Japan, will have the opportunity to enjoy and treasure, just as we have had the opportunity to treasure the cherry trees,? Assistant Secretary of State for Asia Kurt Campbell said in Washington last week.

The dogwood diplomacy might be the highlight of Mr. Noda?s visit, the first by a Japanese leader to the White House in three years. (Japan, passing through a period of higher than normal political turmoil, has had four prime ministers during Obama?s presidency.) But flowering trees are not all the two leaders will celebrate.

Both are welcoming the agreement reached last week to reduce by about 9,000, or almost half, the number of US Marines stationed on the Japanese island of Okinawa. The military presence has been a source of tension in Okinawa and in US-Japan relations for years.

The reduction in forces stationed in Okinawa is part of a realignment of US forces in the Pacific region that will include shifting some Marines to Guam and Hawaii, and stationing others in Australia for the first time. Laying the issue of the Marines? Okinawa presence to rest will allow the two countries to move a recurring irritant off the agenda and to focus on other issues like North Korea, China?s growing military weight, and regional trade, regional experts say.

Both leaders are touting the Okinawa agreement as a plus for Pacific region security. At a White House press conference Monday afternoon, Obama said the realignment would result in a ?more broadly distributed, more flexible? US military presence across the region, while reducing the troops? impact ?on local communities like Okinawa.?

Noda said the redistribution of US forces would lead to a more secure region. And while he did not use the press conference to revisit the controversy over US forces in Okinawa, he did take a moment to express appreciation for the rescue and relief work of the US military personnel dispatched to northern Japan in response to last year?s earthquake and tsunami.

At the press conference the two leaders also addressed China?s rise, with both Obama and Noda saying they welcomed a strong and prosperous China as a partner ? even as both emphasized a need for China to abide by the ?rules and norms? associated with membership in the global community.

In elaborating on that theme, Obama cited respect for intellectual property rights and trade dispute resolution as two areas where China would be expected to improve its compliance with the rule of international law.

Restoring hearing with discrete device: A middle-ear microphone for more convenient cochlear implants

ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2012) ? Cochlear implants have restored basic hearing to some 220,000 deaf people, yet a microphone and related electronics must be worn outside the head, raising reliability issues, preventing patients from swimming and creating social stigma.

Now, a University of Utah engineer and colleagues in Ohio have developed a tiny prototype microphone that can be implanted in the middle ear to avoid such problems.

The proof-of-concept device has been successfully tested in the ear canals of four cadavers, the researchers report in a study just published online in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers journal Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.

The prototype -- about the size of an eraser on a pencil -- must be reduced in size and improved in its ability to detect quieter, low-pitched sounds, so tests in people are about three years away, says the study's senior author, Darrin J. Young, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Utah and USTAR, the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative.

The study showed incoming sound is transmitted most efficiently to the microphone if surgeons first remove the incus or anvil -- one of three, small, middle-ear bones. U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval would be needed for an implant requiring such surgery.

The current prototype of the packaged, middle-ear microphone measures 2.5-by-6.2 millimeters (roughly one-tenth by one-quarter inch) and weighs 25 milligrams, or less than a thousandth of an ounce. Young wants to reduce the package to 2-by-2 millimeters.

Young, who moved the Utah in 2009, conducted the study with Mark Zurcher and Wen Ko, who are his former electrical engineering colleagues at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and with ear-nose-throat physicians Maroun Semaan and Cliff Megerian of University Hospitals Case Medical Center.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH-DC-006850).

Problems with External Parts on Cochlear Implants

The National Institutes of Health says almost 220,000 people worldwide with profound deafness or severe hearing impairment have received cochlear implants, about one-third of them in the United States, where two-fifths of the recipients are children.

In conventional cochlear implant, there are three main parts that are worn externally on the head behind the ear: a microphone to pick up sound, a speech processor and a radio transmitter coil. Implanted under the skin behind the ear are a receiver and stimulator to convert the sound signals into electric impulses, which then go through a cable to between four and 16 electrodes that wind through the cochlea of the inner ear and stimulate auditory nerves so the patient can hear.

"It's a disadvantage having all these things attached to the outside" of the head, Young says. "Imagine a child wearing a microphone behind the ear. It causes problems for a lot of activities. Swimming is the main issue. And it's not convenient to wear these things if they have to wear a helmet."

Young adds that "for adults, it's social perception. Wearing this thing indicates you are somewhat handicapped and that actually prevents quite a percentage of candidates from getting the implant. They worry about the negative image."

As for reliability, "if you have wires connected from the microphone to the coil, those wires can break," he says.

How Sound Moves in Normal Ears, Cochlear Implants and the New Device

Sound normally moves into the ear canal and makes the eardrum vibrate. At what is known as the umbo, the eardrum connects to a chain of three tiny bones: the malleus, incus and stapes, also known as the hammer, anvil and stirrup. The bones vibrate. The stapes or stirrup touches the cochlea, the inner ear's fluid-filled chamber. Hair cells (not really hair) on the cochlea's inner membrane move, triggering the release of a neurotransmitter chemical that carries the sound signals to the brain.

In profoundly deaf people who are candidates for cochlear implants, the hair cells don't work for a variety of reasons, including birth defects, side effects of drugs, exposure to excessively loud sounds or infection by certain viruses.

In a cochlear implant, the microphone, signal processor and transmitter coil worn outside the head send signals to the internal receiver-stimulator, which is implanted in bone under the skin and sends the signals to the electrodes implanted in the cochlea to stimulate auditory nerves. The ear canal, eardrum and hearing bones are bypassed.

The system developed by Young implants all the external components. Sound moves through the ear canal to the eardrum, which vibrates as it does normally. But at the umbo, a sensor known as an accelerometer is attached to detect the vibration. The sensor also is attached to a chip, and together they serve as a microphone that picks up the sound vibrations and converts them into electrical signals sent to the electrodes in the cochlea.

The device still would require patients to wear a charger behind the ear while sleeping at night to recharge an implanted battery. Young says he expects the battery would last one to several days between charging.

Young says the microphone also might be part of an implanted hearing aid that could replace conventional hearing aids for a certain class of patients who have degraded hearing bones unable to adequately convey sounds from conventional hearing aids.

Testing the Microphone in Cadavers

Conventional microphones include a membrane or diaphragm that moves and generates an electrical signal change in response to sound. But they require a hole through which sound must enter -- a hole that would get clogged by growing tissue if implanted. So Young's middle-ear microphone instead uses an accelerometer -- a 2.5-microgram mass attached to a spring -- that would be placed in a sealed package with a low-power silicon chip to convert sound vibrations to outgoing electrical signals.

The package is glued to the umbo so the accelerometer vibrates in response to eardrum vibrations. The moving mass generates an electrical signal that is amplified by the chip, which then connects to the conventional parts of a cochlear implant: a speech processor and stimulator wired to the electrodes in the cochlea.

"Everything is the same as a conventional cochlear implant, except we use an implantable microphone that uses the vibration of the bone," Young says.

To test the new microphone, the researchers used the temporal bones -- bones at the side of the skull -- and related ear canal, eardrum and hearing bones from four cadaver donors.

The researchers inserted tubing with a small loudspeaker into the ear canal and generated tones of various frequencies and loudness. As the sounds were picked up by the implanted microphone, the researchers used a laser device to measure the vibrations of the tiny ear bones. They found the umbo -- where the eardrum connects to the hammer or malleus -- produced the greatest sound vibration, particularly if the incus or anvil bone first was removed surgically.

The experiments showed that when the prototype microphone unit was attached to the umbo, it could pick up medium pitches at conversational volumes, but had trouble detecting quieter, low-frequency sounds. Young plans to improve the microphone to pick up quieter, deeper, very low pitches.

In the tests, the output of the microphone went to speakers; in a real person, it would send sound to the implanted speech processor. To demonstrate the microphone, Young also used it to record the start of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony while implanted in a cadaver ear. It is easily recognizable, even if somewhat fuzzy and muffled.

"The muffling can be filtered out," says Young.

(AP) ? When deadly twisters chewed through the South and Midwest in 2011, thousands of people in the killers' paths had nowhere to hide. Now many of those families are taking an unusual extra step to be ready next time: adding tornado shelters to their homes.

A year after the storms, sales of small residential shelters known as safe rooms are surging across much of the nation, especially in hard-hit communities such as Montgomery and Tuscaloosa in Alabama and in Joplin, Mo., where twisters laid waste to entire neighborhoods.

Manufacturers can barely keep up with demand, and some states are offering grants and other financial incentives to help pay for the added protection and peace of mind.

Tom Cook didn't need convincing. When a 2008 tornado barreled toward his home in rural southwest Missouri, Cook, his wife and their teenage daughter sought refuge in a bathroom. It wasn't enough. His wife was killed.

Cook moved to nearby Joplin to rebuild, never imaging he would confront another monster twister. But he had a safe room installed in the garage just in case.

On May 22, Cook and his daughter huddled inside the small steel enclosure while an EF-5 tornado roared outside. They emerged unharmed, although the new house was gone.

"It was blown away completely ? again," he said. "The only thing standing was that storm room."

Generations ago, homes across America's Tornado Alley often came equipped with storm cellars, usually a small concrete bunker buried in the backyard. Although some of those remain, they are largely relics of a bygone era. And basements are less common than they used to be, leaving many people with no refuge except maybe a bathtub or a room deep inside the house.

The renewed interest in shelters was stirred by last year's staggering death toll ? 358 killed in the South and 161 dead in Joplin. So far this year, more than 60 people have perished in U.S. twisters.

Safe rooms feature thick steel walls and doors that can withstand winds up to 250 mph. They are typically windowless, with no light fixtures and no electricity ? just a small, reinforced place to ride out the storm. Costs generally range from $3,500 to $6,000.

Sizes vary, but most hold only a few people. They can be bolted to the floor of a garage or custom-fitted to squeeze into a small space, even a closet. Some are so small occupants have to crawl inside. A few are buried in the yard like the old storm shelters of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Before the twister devastated Joplin, the Neosho, Mo., safe room manufacturer called Twister Safe had four employees. Now it has 20.

"Business has probably quadrupled, at least," owner Enos Davis said. "We're selling 400 to 500 a year now, compared to maybe 100 before."

Twister Safe's spike in business is even more impressive in Missouri, which does not offer grant money for safe rooms, opting to use its share of federal disaster money for community shelters.

Missouri's choice spotlights a debate in states seeking better tornado protection: Is disaster aid better spent on safe rooms in individual homes or on larger public shelters designed to protect hundreds or thousands of people?

The downside of public shelters is getting there. Even with improvements in twister prediction, venturing out into a rapidly brewing storm is perilous.

"I wouldn't get my family into a car and run that risk," Joplin Assistant City Manager Sam Anselm said. "If you have the opportunity to put something in your house, that's what we would encourage folks to do."

In January, more than 50 people sought safety in a dome-shaped public shelter as a tornado ripped through Maplesville, Ala. No one was hurt.

"The shelter did what it was supposed to do," Mayor Aubrey Latham said.

Since 2005, 31 community shelters have been built in Missouri using FEMA funds, and nine others are under construction, according to Mike O'Connell of the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency.

That number is about to grow. Joplin voters earlier this month approved a $62 million bond issue that will be combined with insurance money and federal aid to build storm shelters at every school. The shelters will double as gyms, classrooms or kitchens.

After more than five dozen tornadoes struck Alabama on April 27, 2011, FEMA gave the state $17 million for safe rooms. More than 4,300 people filed applications for grants. Of those, nearly half have been approved. The others are still being reviewed.

"They absolutely save lives," said Art Faulkner, director of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency.

Alabama is also using $49 million in FEMA money for community shelters.

Following the 2011 tornadoes, nearly 6,200 applications were submitted to Mississippi's "A Safe Place to Go" program, which also uses FEMA funds. That was more requests than the program's $8 million could fund.

Among those who received money were Renee and Larry Seales of Smithville, Miss., where 16 people died in a 2011 twister, including both of Renee's parents. They built a dome-shaped bunker buried in their yard.

"I don't know how many have been put in Smithville, but it seems like every house has one," Renee Seales said.

Since 2009, nearly 16,000 people in Arkansas have received rebates of up to $1,000 to add residential safe rooms.

In Joplin, the state's preference for community shelters leaves residents to pay for safe rooms out of pocket. But for many, the cost is well worth it.

Last May, Debbie and Darrell Nichols hunched inside their safe room in the garage as soon as the tornado sirens began blaring. The roof of their neighbor's home came crashing through their kitchen, and it probably would have killed them. Inside the reinforced room, they were unhurt.

"We were holding hands and holding onto each other," Debbie Nichols said. "Then you hear the glass breaking and the roar, and your ears begin to pop. We walked out, and it was like a scene from 'The Wizard of Oz.'"

Betty Harryman was in a Joplin hospital about to have open-heart surgery when the twister hit. Her bad heart probably saved her life: Her home was leveled.

So when Harryman rebuilt, she added a small safe room where she keeps bottled water and a battery-operated light, fan and radio.

"After what happened," she said, "we thought it would be stupid not to have a safe room."

Marco Rubio joins long list of pols fined by FEC

Marco Rubio (Jae C. Hong/AP)The Federal Election Commission announced Friday it had charged Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio with an $8,000 fine for accepting improper campaign donations during his 2010 Senate run. But should Rubio fans be worried it could hurt his chances to become Mitt Romney's running mate?

If the long list of successful politicians who have faced similar troubles with the FEC is any indication, the answer is no.

Rubio, who Politico first reported would pay the fine for accepting $210,000 in improper donations, joins a long list of notable lawmakers in the FEC Bad Boys Club. And some of their accounting mistakes make Rubio's troubles?part of a campaign that raised more than $21 million in all?look like a squabble over chump change.

In 2010, for instance, the commission slapped now-Democratic Vice President Joseph Biden's presidential campaign with $219,000 in fines for accepting in-kind contributions that included a ride in a corporate jet and donations beyond the legal limit in 2007 and 2008. That's nearly 25 times greater than Rubio's fine, so it hardly seems likely that President Barack Obama's re-election campaign would make Rubio's FEC difficulties an issue if he's on the ticket. (An FEC audit of the Obama campaign earlier this month found that it had failed to report nearly $2 million in donations in 2008.)

The problem, said Bob Biersack, senior fellow at the Center for Responsive Politics, is due to the fast-paced nature of political campaigns combined with the complex rules set by the FEC.

"It's in part the challenge of a pretty chaotic situation where you're growing really fast," said Biersack, who worked at the FEC for 30 years before joining CRP. "The rules are esoteric sometimes; they're weird sometimes. It's hard to understand. It's money, so it's very precise. People are giving contributions very quickly."

While Rubio's FEC fine?which the campaign appears to have resolved swiftly?is not likely to torpedo his political career, Biersack added that the standards set by the commission are still important.

"I don't want to minimize this, necessarily. Those rules are there for a reason," he said. "There are restrictions and limitations and they're meaningful. ? It's not trivial, and I don't think think they treated it as trivial either, but in the greater scheme of things, this is not the biggest scandal that the campaign finance world has seen."

Failing to adhere to the FEC's rules has proved a bipartisan problem over the years. In 2004, the commission charged former President George W. Bush's presidential campaign with $90,000 in civil penalties for not disclosing its receipts during the Florida recount proceedings in 2000. Other FEC violators include Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, who ran as Al Gore's 2000 vice presidential running mate, 2004 Democratic presidential candidate Al Sharpton and former Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to name a few.

Yemen president challenged by ex-president's son

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemen's new president faced a new challenge Sunday when the powerful son of the man he replaced appointed his own person ? a relative ? to head a security unit to protect his father.

One of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi's main goals has been to purge the military of his predecessor's cronies and relatives to enable reforms and restore security to the country in turmoil for more than a year.

These steps are seen essential to enable Yemen's armed forces to confront al-Qaida-linked militants, who have taken over parts of southern Yemen while the country has been distracted by the power struggle in the capital.

A senior military official in the Defense Ministry said former president Ali Abdullah Saleh continues to meddle in the country's affairs.

Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, son of the former president, commands the powerful Special Forces and Republican Guard, among the country's best trained troops. His appointment of a relative, Tarek Mohammed, to head his father's security unit was direct insubordination to Hadi.

Hadi had already demoted Mohammed from head of the Presidential Guards to head a provincial military unit, an order Mohammed and the younger Saleh refused to obey.

The military official said Hadi has rejected the new appointment. In response, Mohammed refused to hand over his current job during a meeting attended by the U.N. representative to Yemen.

The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Another relative rejected an order to resign as head of the air force for weeks, finally stepping down last week. That dispute forced a shutdown in Yemen's commercial airport for a day.

Hadi took over from Saleh in February following nearly a year of street protests. In his purge efforts, he faces the risk that his predecessor's loyalists might cause massive disruptions rather than go quietly.

Earlier this month, the ex-president Saleh said in a statement that his loyalists should maintain leading roles in running the country's affairs to ensure stability, in clear defiance against attempts by his successor to purge them.

The ongoing power struggle could hamper the new government's offensive against al-Qaida militants. In recent weeks, troops have been engaged in daily battles with the militant group in southern Yemeni provinces.

Also Sunday, Yemeni security officials said three suspected al-Qaida militants were killed when a missile hit their SUV in northeastern Yemen. The officials had no details on the source of the attack or the identity of the three. U.S. drones have been active over Yemen, tracking and striking al-Qaida operatives with missiles.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

The militant group said Sunday it released 73 soldiers captured by its fighters during battles with government forces in the south.

The terror network said in an emailed statement that the freeing of the soldiers followed mediation efforts by tribal elders and senior clerics. Relatives of some freed prisoners confirmed the release.

The soldiers were freed in the city of Jaar in the southern province of Abyan in a ceremony attended by top leaders of the terror network in Yemen, including military leader Qasim al-Rimi, witnesses and the statement said. The soldiers left in trucks and private cars for the nearby port city of Aden.

Al-Qaida has held Jaar for a year. The province's capital Zinjibar is also under al-Qaida control, but government troops fought their way into its center last week.

A bit upset about this...

Okay since I can't send a PM without the required 10 posts (Which IMO is utterly ridiculous), i'm afraid I'm going to have to put this here.

I spent at least half a week creating a detailed character profile for my bounty hunter character in NotSoHeartless' RP Wierd West, I submitted it and now I've been told since there was already a bounty hunter character there that I'm expected to tweak mine to make my character a criminal. Um....WTF.

Ok for starters, it would be highly unlikely that there would be ONE bounty hunter in the entire earth which encompasses this rp. Much less only ONE after this group of criminals.

Second of all I wasted my valuable time and have put off a few things just to make an in depth character for this rp. That is at least 4 days of my life I'll never get back. I'm pretty upset about this yeah, and I think I'm owed an explanation.

Google, an underdog in Asia, lays plans for Taiwan data center

Taiwan gets Internet traffic easily from the United States. I sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google dominates Internet search engines by such a wide margin in the United States that it?s a verb as well as the corporate name of its Silicon Valley-based creator.

But in China, Google vies with the local, government-approved search engine Baidu ? which means 100 degrees ? and lags South Korea?s local brand Naver. It competes head on against fellow American company Yahoo for searches in Taiwan, splitting traffic roughly 50-50. Yahoo has also held a historic grip on Japan.

So this week, the 14-year-old Google announced that by the end of next year, it would open a data center in Taiwan to improve search speeds and reliability around the region.

Google has already started building data centers in Hong Kong and Singapore. But the larger one in Taiwan comes with government incentives and will boast a specific geographic advantage. That is, Taiwan gets Net traffic easily from the United States, home to Google and the source of numerous Internet search results, as it sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly here from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google will spend a combined $700 million on the three centers, which generally house computers and storage systems that help speed connections and keep them secure.

?More new Internet users are coming online everyday here in Asia than anywhere else in the world,? Google?s Asia Pacific President Daniel Alegre said at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the coastal facility in Taiwan. ?That is why we are building data centers in Asia ??to ensure that our users here have the fastest, most reliable access possible to all of our services, so they can continue putting them to work.?

Google?s Taiwan data center will speed up searches particularly in China, which is just 160 kilometers (100 miles) away but has sought to censor Web searches. Baidu now controls about 75 percent of the searches in China.

?That?s a key, to serve China,? says Marvin Ma, software and services analyst with the market research firm IDC in Taipei. ?China will notice a clear improvement. And this way Google can avoid the censorship problem.?

In 2010, Google shut down its locally based Chinese search engine after a dispute with the communist government over censorship and cyber-attacks, a row that prompted harsh words from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Google won?t give market shares for Asia or estimate the overall number of users in the region. In South Korea, Naver still handles about two-thirds of the Internet searches, analysts estimate. But two years ago, Google and Yahoo signed a search-engine technology deal that has muffled the rivalry in Japan.

Google is also catching up in Taiwan as the ever popular Yahoo retrenches, with reports of layoffs in the pipeline, says Jamie Lin, founding partner with Taipei-based tech investor appWorks Ventures. ?If they don?t make any mistakes, Google is going to be the dominant player in a couple of years,? he says.

Pwn Plug

Pwn Plug (Basic: $480, Elite: $770) is a harmless-looking little white device that makes it possible to run penetration tests against any network easily and unobtrusively. A mini-computer that looks more like an oversized power adapter, it comes pre-loaded with various hacking tools to probe open ports on networks, sniff incoming and outgoing data packets, hijack SSL traffic, and crack wireless encryption keys, among others. With Pwn Plug, security teams can scan and check the security of their networks, making it an invaluable part of any network administrator's arsenal of tools.

Since a data breach is the wrong time to discover holes in an organization's network security, administrators often conduct penetration tests?or hire external consultants?to uncover issues beforehand. Perhaps an employee has set up an unauthorized wireless router in the office and did not secure it. The firewall for the small business network may be mis-configured to have too many open ports. The network key might be too short and simple, making it easy to brute-force. It's possible the Web server is running an older and unpatched version of the software, making it vulnerable to exploits targeting known vulnerabilities. Hiring someone to conduct a penetration test looking for these sorts of weakness can get prohibitively expensive, and this is where Pwn Plug from Pwnie Express comes in.

A network administrator at a small business with a bit of technical know-how can use the mix of open source and proprietary tools preloaded on the device to find the issues before the attackers do. The bad guys aren't going to bother developing a sophisticated way to break into the network if the door is unlocked and the windows are wide open.

Penetration testing also has a social engineering component. The tester can try to trick users to reveal sensitive information over the phone, or to trick users into granting access. Some companies have included Pwn Plug as part of a social engineering test, to see whether employees would allow a stranger to plug in a device into the wall without any questions. Administrators can point out the devices to employees to illustrate how they were tricked, and what the social engineering risks are.

Even the big guys are concerned. Financial giant Bank of America has reportedly shipped these devices to remotely check network security at several of its regional branch offices.

The Pwn Plug maintains persistent, covert, encrypted SSH connections with target networks and tunnel through application-aware firewalls, proxies and intrusion prevention systems. It can send SMS text messages to any phone number whenever it establishes an SSH tunnel with a target network.

Opening the Box
The adapter itself is white, measuring 4.3 inches by 2.7 inches by 1.9 inches (HWD). It looks like an over-sized USB adapter, with a power plug on one end, a slot for an SDHC card, a mini-USB port that is actually a serial console, and a standard USB 2.0 port. The Pwn Plug has a 1.2 GHz ARM CPU with 512 MB SDRAM and 512 MB flash drive.

There is nothing to indicate that it is anything other than an adapter. The only information on the unit is the manufacturer's name, Globalscape Technologies. Nothing on the device says Pwnie Express or Pwn Plug.

The Pwn Plug also came with an extension power cable in case it could not be plugged directly into the wall. I inserted a 16 GB SDHC card into the device's expansion slot for storage since there's only 512 MB to start with. I also found two stealth decals to stick on the adapter.

The stealth decals were a great touch. These are stickers that can be slapped on the Pwn Plug to trick observant folks into not asking what it is. For example, the sticker with a green flower and the word "fresh" underneath could make the person think it was just an (overly large) air freshener. Another sticker made it look like just another power adapter.

Pwnie Express also provided a Huawei Mobile Broadband dongle for testing 3G connectivity, a Linksys USB 300M Ethernet adapter from Cisco, and an Alfa Network long-range wireless network adapter. These would be used to test the Pwn Plug over various types of networks.

All Pwn Plug devices are pre-loaded with Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope), and various open source tools that can be used to test network security such as Metasploit, Fast-Track, SET, SSLstrip, nmap, hydra, dsniff, netcat, nikto, nbtscan, scapy, and ettercap. The wireless models also tools specific for cracking wireless networks, such as USB Alfa, One-click Evil AP, Kismet, Aircrack-NG, WEPbuster, and Karmetasploit. The 3G models offer USB Alfa, a 3G/GSM adapter, and out-of-band SSH access over 3G and GSM networks. I also found open source tools hashalot, httptunnel, and macchanger installed. Elite offers all the capabilities available in the the Wireless and 3G, as well as the ability to bypass 802.1.x network access control via transparent bridging, Pwnie Express said.

(AP) ? Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young apologized to his team and fans Friday, just before getting arraigned on a hate crime harassment charge for a fight at his hotel during which police say he yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

Young posted a $5,000 bond at a brief hearing in Manhattan court and was released less than an hour before the Tigers' game against the Yankees. He faces a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge that entails targeting someone for his or her religious beliefs. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.

Wearing a dark suit, Young said nothing during his arraignment.

In a statement, however, Young said: "I sincerely regret what happened last night." He apologized to the Tigers owners and organization, his teammates, family and Detroit fans.

"I take this matter very seriously and assure everyone that I will do everything I can to improve myself as a person and player," Young said.

General manager Dave Dombrowski did not discuss Young's arrest with reporters. Tigers spokesman Brian Britten said after the team's 7-6 loss to the New York Yankees that Dombrowski was still working out several issues relating to Young.

Manager Jim Leyland snapped at a reporter who asked about Young after Detroit's fifth straight loss.

"Get lost, get lost, get lost," Leyland said. "Do yourself a favor and get lost."

Young's jersey hung in his locker in the visitors' clubhouse at Yankee Stadium and his helmet was in the dugout rack Friday afternoon, but he was not at the ballpark.

"My lineup's up," Leyland said tersely when asked if he had to rethink his batting order for the game.

The Tigers arrived in New York at 10:30 p.m. Thursday after their plane sat on the tarmac for 2 hours, 15 minutes in Detroit, according to Leyland.

Around 2:30 a.m., Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York. Nearby, a group of about four Chicago tourists staying at the hotel were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke and a Star of David around his neck, according to police. Afterward, as the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young started yelling anti-Semitic epithets, police said.

It was not clear whom Young was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with the Chicago group, and a 32-year-old man was tackled and sustained scratches to his elbows, according to police and the criminal complaint.

Both Young and the group went inside the hotel, and at some point, police were called, and Young was arrested, police said. Young was first taken to a hospital because he was believed to be intoxicated, police said.

Defense attorney Daniel J. Ollen said accounts of the fight have varied. He said there was video, which he hasn't seen, that showed someone in the other group of people said something to Young before the scuffle.

"He clearly reacted to something that was said to him," Ollen said.

Joe Torre, Major League Baseball's executive vice president for baseball operations, visited with Leyland during batting practice but would not speak to the matter.

"We can't comment because we're still gathering information," Torre said.

Young went 0 for 3 with a walk in a 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. He is hitting .242 with one home run and five RBIs, is signed to a one-year contract for $6,725,000 and can become a free agent after the season.

In 2006, Young was suspended for 50 games without pay by the International League for throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the chest. Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 amateur draft, was ejected in the first inning after taking a called third strike. He lingered in the batter's box, walked away and then threw his bat end over end at the umpire, hitting him in the chest.

The Tigers called up Brad Eldred from Triple-A Toledo after Detroit's sixth loss in seven games on Thursday. Eldred was hitting .388 with 13 homers and 35 RBIs in 20 games for Toledo and Leyland indicated that he would see significant time as the designated hitter.

This isn't the first time a Tigers player has run into trouble with the law. Miguel Cabrera was arrested just before the start of spring training in February 2011 on suspicion of drunken driving. In 2009, Cabrera was picked up by police at his home in Michigan after a fight with his wife ? with a blood alcohol level three times above Michigan's legal limit. No charges were filed. And catcher Gerald Laird was arrested following a brawl at a Phoenix Suns game in December 2009.

Young is due back in court May 29.
