How NOT to do it?!
My Coach asked me an interesting question yesterday ? ??So why are some people better networkers, what makes someone a bad networker??.? That got me thinking.
I have to say, I meet plenty of Athena ladies who take full advantage of our training opportunities, and are fabulous networkers.? But I have done a fair amount of networking and, consequently, have come across people doing things in a way which is only going to sabotage their networking efforts. (And it?s a fair bet that eventually they will decide that networking doesn?t work). I should add? mea culpa.? I?m sure I?m guilty too ? but I?ve learned!
So this is my take on how NOT to do it?!
- Turn up when ?you feel like it.? You don?t really need to make EVERY meeting, do you?
- If you booked but you?re not turning up, don?t bother telling the organisers.? Why would they need to know? you?re not going?
- Don?t bother with 1 to 1s.? After all, they?re really time consuming and you?re busy, aren?t you.
- And the 1:1 you did book? don?t turn up for that either.
- Don?t bother practising your pitch.? Or composing it in advance.? Write it out while everyone else is doing theirs.? Yes it means you?ll miss what they are saying but at least you?ll have yours written down.
- Be pushy.
- Spam everyone, whether you met them at the event or not.? Their name?s on the attendance list so of course they want your newsletter. Every week.
- Ignore what the Speaker or Chair is saying, your private conversation is much more important. ?
- Be negative.? You?ve had a bad morning/day/week, ?so why not vent some of it while you?re networking.? You?ll feel so much better (even if no one else does!).
- When you?re having a conversation, keep looking out for someone more interesting to talk to.? I?m sure the person you?re talking to won?t notice you looking over their shoulder.
